Key Dates

1949 The Alliance Francaise de Singapour is founded by a group of French-speaking residents headed by Paul Clerc. There are only 20 students and 50 members. Conversation classes are held twice a week in the evening and there is only one French language class and no teaching material. The Alliance is considered more of a social club than a language school.
   
1950 The Alliance receives its first textbooks and records.
   
1953 The first Director of Courses, Jacques Le Mercier arrives from Paris.
   
1956 100 students register and they are not only European but Singaporean.
   
1960 More students register this year.
   
1962 350 students register. New teaching methods are introduced. Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew visits the school.
   
1963 Tan Sri Runme Shaw visits the Alliance. The Alliance acquires its first modern cinema projector to replace the one borrowed from Paris.
   
1966 The Alliance receives the complete support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An Assistant Director and teachers are sent from Paris.
   
1968 Tan Sri Runme Shaw becomes President of the Alliance Française de Singapour. 650 students register.
   
1970 The Runme Shaw Challenge Cup is created by Tan Sri Runme Shaw.
   
1974 1,200 students register this year.
   
1975 The ‘Lien’ is published for the first time and has a circulation of 1,000 copies.
   
1976 In the first trimester, 800 students register at Scotts Road and 150 students at the Golden Mile Branch. The Alliance organises 5 art exhibitions.
   
1977 For the first time, a total of 1,000 registrations is recorded in the first trimester.
   
1979 The first summer course in France is organised.
