LUNAR NEW YEAR

Lion dances at Alliance Française

This year, we once again celebrated Lunar New year with our members and students at Alliance Française de Singapour, accompanied by the presence of our president Andrew Lau, executive director Fabian Forni, and board member Ariane Nabarro, expressing their well wishes for the new year. We were thrilled to surprise our students with a group of talented Lion dance performers visiting our building, from the lobby to the theatre, the gallery to our classrooms! The event was a true spectacle, with the vibrant colours and energetic music creating an atmosphere of excitement and joy.

But what is the Lion dance? The lion dance is a traditional Chinese dance performed on big occasions such as the Chinese New Year for good luck as it is believed that the lion is an auspicious animal. In Chinese culture, the lion symbolizes power, wisdom and superiority. Dance lions are performed to chase away evil and ghosts’ spirits and to bring prosperity for the upcoming year. Clashing cymbals, a gong and drums usually accompany the lively performance of the Lions.

The event was a true celebration of culture, community, and tradition. As an organization that promotes cultural exchange and understanding, Alliance Française is always looking for ways to connect with different cultures and communities. The Lunar New Year celebration was a perfect example of this, as we were able to come together and appreciate the richness and diversity of our world. We look forward to continuing to celebrate cultural diversity and exchange in the years to come.

Here are some pictures of the Lion dances which performed at Alliance Française!
